Wavelet Thresholding via a Bayesian Approach

چکیده
We discuss a Bayesian formalism which gives rise to a type of wavelet threshold estimation in non-parametric regression. A prior distribution is imposed on the wavelet coe cients of the unknown response function, designed to capture the sparseness of wavelet expansion common to most applications. For the prior speci ed, the posterior median yields a thresholding procedure. Our prior model for the underlying function can be adjusted to give functions falling in any speci c Besov space. We establish a relation between the hyperparameters of the prior model and the parameters of those Besov spaces within which realizations from the prior will fall. Such a relation gives insight into the meaning of the Besov space parameters. Moreover, the established relation makes it possible in principle to incorporate prior knowledge about the function's regularity properties into the prior model for its wavelet coe cients. However, prior knowledge about a function's regularity properties might be hard to elicit; with this in mind, we propose a standard choise of prior hyperparameters that works well in our examples. Several simulated examples are used to illustrate our method, and comparisons are made with other thresholding methods. We also present an application to a data set collected in an anaesthesiological study.

The sparseness and decorrelation properties of the discrete wavelet transform have been exploited to develop powerful denoising methods. Most schemes use arbitrary thresholding nonlinearities with ad hoc parameters, or employ computationally expensive adaptive procedures. Wavelet methods have demonstrated considerable success in function estimation through term-by-term thresholding of the empirical wavelet coefficients. However, it has been shown that grouping the empirical wavelet coefficients into blocks and making simultaneous threshold decisions about all the coefficients in each block has a number of advantages over term-by-term wavelet thresholding, includ...

We investigate the posterior rate of convergence for wavelet shrinkage using a Bayesian approach in general Besov spaces. Instead of studying the Bayesian estimator related to a particular loss function, we focus on the posterior distribution itself from a nonparametric Bayesian asymptotics point of view and study its rate of convergence. We obtain the same rate as in Abramovich et al. (2004) w...

The method of signal denoising via wavelet thresholding was popularised by Donoho and Johnstone (1994, 1995) and is now widely applied in science and engineering. It is based on thresholding of wavelet coefficients arising from the standard scalar orthogonal discrete wavelet transform (DWT). Recently this approach has been extended to incorporate thresholding coefficients arising from the discr...
